Suggested Searches

The following searches are designed to provide you with a sense of the variety of ways you can use the Content Explorer map. You may search both by keyword (i.e., “housing first”), as well as by Content Type (i.e., Case Studies, Research, Best Practices), or by some combination of the two. A variety of other search filters are also provided for those seeking to narrow or refine search results.

Please let us know what you think about the Content Explorer map and search results. And, if you feel that an important resource or program is missing, let us know through the Share Your Story function.

Search Help

Welcome to the Content Explorer! There are two basic ways to search, and this is a guide to them.

  1. Keyword search

Just type in one or more words in the search box and click SUBMIT or hit the ENTER key.

If you type more than one word in, the search engine will look for all content that contains ANY of the words (it assumes you mean X or Y or Z).

If you want to search for content that contains ALL of the words you type in, put the word AND between them (X and Y and Z).

If you're looking for an exact match, like the name of an organization or a significant phrase, put the words in quotes. For example, you could type in "Corporation for Supportive Housing" or "cost effectiveness."

You can also mix things up. You could type in "supportive housing" and "cost effectiveness", for example, to get content that has both exact phrases in it. Or you could type in "family homelessness" or "homeless families" to get content that has either exact phrase in it.

If you want to get really fancy, you can exclude words or phrases. An example would be "supportive housing" and not families.

If you want to substitute a plus sign (+) for AND, just make sure to leave no space in front of the word/phrase you want included (example: X +Y +Z).

  2. Filter search

There are 6 types of filters: Issues, Content Types, Property Types, Number of Units, Area Population and Date.

This is so you can narrow your search to its most accurate. Every filter is treated like an AND, so the search engine will look for content tagged with all the filters you checked.

    Issues
These are the five major issues in homelessness.

    Content Types
These help you narrow your search to certain areas of the site or kinds of content.

    Property Types
If you are looking for housing projects, this will help you narrow down the kind of property.

    Number of Units
This narrows down the size of the housing project.

    Area Population
This helps you limit your search to different community sizes. For more information on this, please see information on Metropolitan Statistical Areas at Wikipedia. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_United_States_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas]

    Date
You can restrict your searches to content that's been entered on the site during 7, 30, 60, or 90 days. (The default search returns all the content that's ever been entered.)
