Federal funding resources for the creation and support of affordable housing and related services for homeless or formerly homeless individuals and families. It is important that funders working within their communities understand the basics of these programs in order to better leverage their own dollars.
You may be familiar with some of these programs - Section 8, for example, is one of the most well-known housing assistance programs and is an integral part of many prevention and affordable housing projects. Others may be new to you. Congress recently passed legislation that made important changes to one of the programs mentioned here – for instance, what used to be called the Emergency Shelter Grant program is now named the Emergency Solutions Grant program to reflect HUD’s committed focus to permanent housing solutions for the homeless.
