There have been enormous changes in the economy and financial sector over the past year. The mortgage crisis, volatile stock market, and job losses have taken a serious toll on the nation and our most vulnerable communities. These challenges, however, have been accompanied by new opportunities for change. The current political environment is ripe with possibilities for health reform, building the capacity of our public health system, and strengthening the health and social service safety net.  

Today it is more important than ever for grantmakers to sustain their roles as change agents, even if this means rethinking some strategies for promoting change in the short term. Now is the time for foundations to demonstrate their true measure and impact. It is a time for funders to be bold, creative, and willing to take risks in how they conduct their work and understand their mission.   

Taking Risks at a Critical Time will be a different kind of GIH annual meeting. Like a retreat, it will provide multiple opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions, and sessions will be designed to encourage direct and open exchange.
